The Choir:

Brief History /Context:

Prompted and supported by Fr. Habte, the current choir was started in late 2014 with a broader ambition, to both animate the liturgical elements and invigorate congregational singing during the 10.30 a.m. Mass and for the high feasts/liturgical seasons. This congregational involvement is key as sustaining a choir and singing as a parish. Make a joyful noise

The current choir is made-up of a small number of committed members of the parish. We welcome all ages, all talents; the only requirement is willingness to sing, and a commitment to practice together.

The choir and congregation now, after approximately five years, are better versed in the hymns we sing.

Choir rehearsals and ‘choir lite’:

The demands of modern life have adversely impacted on sustained choir commitment with another challenge, namely, diminished attendance at weekday rehearsals. Originally rehearsals were held on a Monday evening, after consultation, this moved to Thursday evenings to better suit the majority and work life balance.

However, despite the change, attendance at rehearsals has fallen choir new members needed for many reasons. Hence a new model is called for or perhaps it is the evolving nature of congregational singing at this present point in time, that has morphed into what at St. Simon and St. Jude R.C. we call ‘Choir lite’.

Introducing ‘Choir lite’ means weekday choir rehearsals will cease as of September 2019. Choir rehearsals will take place on the Sunday at 9.30 a.m. preceding the 10.30 a.m. mass. Please do join us, at St. Simon & St. Jude. RC.

Where there is a need or desire to learn new hymns, prepare for liturgical dates or feasts, for instance, Advent – Christmas, Lent-Easter, Ad-hoc sessions will be organised for the entire parish to support and take part in.

More than ever we still need continued commitment and punctuality to Sunday rehearsals as this improves the growth of the choir, (who serve to invite the congregation to join in the singing), making for a rounded sound and harmonic balance. As the saying goes, ' practice makes perfect’.

Choir composition, past and present:

happiness is singing in the choirSt. Simon and St. Jude R.C. is both lucky and blessed to have committed individuals who give generously of their time and talents both vocally and as musicians and general helpers. Musicians and singers are always wanted and welcomed. If you enjoy singing, come and join us.

We currently have Benjamin Chan as our organist/pianist. This is one of his websites Click on this link.

While in the parish and when time allowed, we were able to call on the professional services of Lara Martin to sing with us and as a soloist, click here to view her website.

The choir has seen numerous musicians and vocalist join us and sing or play with us. However, as jobs and circumstances change these committed individuals have moved on. We are grateful to all who share their talents and give freely of their time.

Singers and musicians are always wanted. To all musicians, vocalists and congregation who support the church and singing together we say thank you!

Psalms 104:33 - I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
