December 2019:

These are the suggested hymns for the month of December, selected from the Southwark Diocese Music Planner. Rehearsals are held in the church on Sunday at 9.30 a.m. before the 10.30 a.m. Mass, we now move to a ‘choir lite’ stage for several reasons.

For the past five years the parish held a week day hymnal singing practice, initially on a Monday then switching to a Thursday, those rehearsals now cease (as of September 2019). Additional rehearsals will be organised on an ad hoc basis as and when required, for example, to learn new hymns or material or when preparing for special occasions. Please click here to view Choir 'lite'.

Occasionally the hymn numbers may be subject to change.  The final selected hymns are presented on the main web page Hymns.

The hymns below are suggestions and subject to change.

The Season of Advent - Cycle A -

The Year of Matthew 2019 - 2020

Today a new liturgical cycle commences. Advent is the start to a cycle that finishes on the Feast of Christ the King next year, 2020.

We all remember that Advent is a time to prepare for Christmas, when Christ’s coming is celebrated. It is also a time when we direct our minds and hearts to await Christ’s second coming. So, we have a season of waiting and preparing; a time for reflection and introspection; a period of expectation.

During advent the musical choices reflect and support themes in our liturgies. It is important to re-iterate and understand that Advent is not Christmas. We should avoid the temptation to spring Christmas early by introducing Christmas Carols in Advent. Our Superstores and Shopping precincts will be doing this for us. The Advent wreath/ lit candles each Sunday help to mark the passage of Advent, we can use that sequence of lit candles each Sunday to help us better focus and spiritualy prepare during Advent for Christmas.

1st Sunday of Advent

 1st Sunday of Advent (A) – 01st December 2019

Themes / Thoughts: Today we rejoice that the night of our long pilgrimage to God’s eternal city, the new Jerusalem, will soon be over. The Lord’s unending Day is dawning. Already, in the words of Isaiah, we see ‘the mountain of the Temple of the Lord’ etched against the eastern sky. Let us wake up and stand ready.

Readings:  Isaiah 2:1-5   Psalm 121   Romans 13:11-14    Matthew 24:37-44

Psalm 121:  I rejoiced when I heard them say: "Let us go to God's house".
