Dates: LENT & holy week 2019 - What is lent?

Lent ScriptureThis year, Lent begins on Wednesday, 06th March, 2019. The liturgical season of Lent consists of forty days of fasting, prayer, and penitence beginning at Ash Wednesday and concluding at sundown on Holy Thursday. The official liturgical colour for the season of Lent is violet.

Lent is a time of preparation for the death of Christ on Good Friday and His Resurrection on Easter Sunday. It traditionally lasts for a period of 40 days of repentance, with prayer, abstinence, confession and prayer. Besides the sacrifice of giving things up we can also ‘do’ something. We can carry out acts of positive good, for example, attend another mass, join a choir, sing with a choir on Sundays, carry out additional voluntary tasks in the church we attend. We can be more participative generally, help with chores around the house, shop for a neighbour in need, help in the community etc. The choice for good deeds and ‘doing good’ are endless. In todays technologically reliant world perhaps we may consider reducing our footprint or interaction with the less important elements that comprise the digital world and reduction or switching off from social media sites for a period, the choice is a personal one. Perhaps we could ask of ourselves some deeper questions, for  example, 'What can I do, personally, to make a difference or improve that part of the world or environment that impacts me?' and 'What can I do to enhance my spiritual being during Lent and the period after?'
